Self-Producing for Playwrights
This is a comprehensive two-day workshop for playwrights who want to get their work in front of an audience.
It may be that you're an experienced playwright finding that the number of commission opportunities have reduced, or you’re a new playwright wanting to get your work out there for the first time. It doesn't matter what the reason is; sometimes the best way forward is to get the job done yourself.
This short course will focus on all the areas that are likely to come up when producing a show for the first time. Whether that be an R+D sharing, a rehearsed reading, a one person show that you’re performing yourself, or a huge musical with a cast of forty; the guiding principles are the same.
Reasons why all playwrights at all places in their career should know the building blocks of producing:
The two-day workshop will be a practical, hands-on, discussion-led dive into DIY producing with exercises to work through and some homework that will leave you with the knowledge and confidence for producing the work yourself if you want to or have to.
Across two full days we will be looking at the following areas:

Reasons why all playwrights at all places in their career should know the building blocks of producing:
- You've got a show that audiences need to see.
- Getting your work on stage is more likely to get you seen by commissioning organisations than unsolicited script submissions.
- The commissions aren't coming in and you're sick of sitting on your hands waiting.
- Understanding the language of other departments makes collaborations smoother.
- Knowing you can walk away and do it yourself provides confidence when working with commissioning organisations.
The two-day workshop will be a practical, hands-on, discussion-led dive into DIY producing with exercises to work through and some homework that will leave you with the knowledge and confidence for producing the work yourself if you want to or have to.
Across two full days we will be looking at the following areas:
- Planning
- Budgeting
- Communication
- Venues and Deals
- Marketing and PR
- Fundraising
- People
